Internet security solution provider HostingArmor.com (www.hostingarmor.com) announced on Wednesday that it has launched its website security scanning tool, offering website operators a simple and affordable means of scanning their sites for malware vulnerabilities.

The problem, according to the company’s announcement, is that while many website operators understand how to run their businesses, a much smaller number of them understand how to maintain a secure server. “I’ve seen, time and time again, situations when website owners will assume that their hosting company or their webmaster keeps their server patched and up to date and secure against web application vulnerabilities,” says Sean Faircloth, co-director of technical operations, quoted in the press release. “All too often this is not the case. The problem is, most site owners know and understand how to run their business, but know very little about maintaining secure servers.”

Whereas scanning a server for security holes has traditionally required complex installations and a certain degree of security expertise, Hosting Armor says its tool was designed to bring an equivalent level of technical detail to a broader audience. The tool works without software install.

The company says it is offering a free 30-day trial of the vulnerability scanner, which allows a website operator to scan their domain up to 35 times during that first month.

In its announcement for the tool, HostingArmor doesn’t specifically mention a means for hosts to distribute the service, but in the reseller section of its website, the company describes a white label program through which the tool can be re-branded. “HostingArmor was initially developed specifically for value-added resellers to use,” says the company, on its website.

Leveraging its relationship with Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) and BlackBerry developer Research in Motion (www.rim.com), Web host Rebel Networks (www.rebelnetworks.com) has built and setup a Hosted Exchange and Blackberry Enterprise service infrastructure in its data center in Toronto, Canada. According to Rebel Networks’ Friday announcement, the “Oh WOW Amazing” Cloud provides email and storage solutions to customers worldwide from a secure Canadian environment.“Our primary goal is to help small and medium business customers set up collaboration, email, and realated services, without the need to manage mail servers, licensing, security, and other IT facets,” Rebel Networks president and chief executive officer Domenic Macchione said in a statement.

Rebel Networks provides scalable, secure and full-featured Hosted Exchange solutions that give users the ability to easily collaborate without them having to invest in mail servers, software licenses, security, or be involved with ongoing system administration. Users can have options to have active Sync enabled for their iPhones, as well as have full Blackberry Enterprise Hosting for their Blackberry Devices. Sharepoint, and Communications server will be added within 60 days.

Rebel Networks also plans to offer a wholesale version of OWAcloud to their resellers and other smaller hosting companies later this month.

The OWAcloud, according to Rebel Networks, will offer more than just email and blackberry colaboration. The plan for OWAcloud is to have small Business customers pay small monthly fee’s for services required such as telephony and voicemail integration, CRM solutions, email, mobility devices, but also wiki portals, tools, and access to legal documents, HR documents, best practices, and online accounting.

“The Idea is simple, a small business today needs to deal with many facets of IT, Telephony, Mobility, and outside consultants to help them manage all of these components and integrate it with HR, Legal, office administration,” Macchione said. “This cloud will make it much easier for small business to manage all aspects of IT, without spending CAPEX, or extra in IT.”

Rebel Networks services include the provision of managed dedicated servers, unmanaged collocation services, domain names services, reseller hosting, and shared Web hosting solutions with 100-percent server uptime.

As part of its cloud computing strategy, Rebel Networks added a new data center last month in Dallas, providing a range of services, including shared hosting, semi and fully-managed dedicated hosting, colocation and virtual servers. Rebel Networks said it would be adding US based Microsoft Exchange, Blackberry and other SaaS services with the launch of this data center, complimenting the SaaS services out of Toronto.

Software, services and solutions provider Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) and telecommunication service provider LG Uplus (www.lguplus.com) have formed a broad strategic alliance for bringing to market a range of cloud services that will leverage Microsoft’s software platforms and cloud offerings “to enable a connected digital lifestyle and work style,” for LG U+ customers, according to Microsoft’s announcement.“We are very excited to be working with LG U+ to bring the convenience and flexibility of cloud services to its end users,” Microsoft chief executive officer Steve Ballmer said in a statement. “We envision a partnership that will help South Korean businesses improve productivity and boost their competitiveness while delivering integrated services across the PC, TV and mobile phone to consumers. The cloud represents a remarkable opportunity for Microsoft and our partners such as LG U+ where together we can connect users to their favorite people, places and things in more seamless ways than ever before.”

Under the terms of a memorandum of understanding revealed this week, the alliance will help LG U+ offer a range of next-generation services that are simple to install and use and require lower maintenance. By leveraging Microsoft Online Services, LG U+ will be able to deliver enterprise-class solutions and rich user experiences to small and midsize enterprises and consumers through its Smart Workplace offering. Additional services contemplated under the alliance include collaboration on cloud services across three areas, software as a service, platform as a service and infrastructure as a service.

In a recent article, “The Role of Culture on Technology Adoption”, published in the Journal of World Business, the authors explained how an amalgam of cultural factors, education levels, wealth and critical local resources shape a nation’s propensity to adopt emerging technologies. In comparing Brazil and South Korea, the latter’s emphasis on personal relationships and networks was a major factor in its adoption of technologies — making it one of the most accepting places on the globe for new tech.

Microsoft and LG U+ intend to form joint technical feasibility teams to explore the technical and business viability of converged homes and social mobility, which will ultimately provide a fully converged experience across the PC, mobile phone and TV, bringing end users a connected digital lifestyle. Contrary to many consumer cloud services that are geared toward early adopters with a high degree of technical knowledge, this offering will be developed to essentially bring cloud services into mainstream use.

“We hope that our strategic alliance with Microsoft will result in our customers being able to access information and services with any device,” LG U+ vice chairman Sang Chul Lee said in a statement. “LG U+ continuously enhances its offerings to ensure that our customers have the best digital services. We believe the combination of Microsoft’s innovative technologies and LG U+’s resources will accelerate the adoption of cloud services, bringing consumers more convenient services and fresh user experiences.”

Go Daddy wants you to produce a summer blockbuster showing the world how you would advertise the iconic Go Daddy brand. Putting the public in charge of advertising worked so well the first time earlier this year, Go Daddy is launching the “Go Daddy Commercial Contest: Summer Edition” with a Grand Prize worth a quarter of a million dollars. The twist this time around? You get to create content for TV and an accompanying Internet-Only version.

The world’s largest Web hosting provider and top domain name registrar worldwide is challenging the public to create broadcast commercials that drive viewers online to see an Internet-Only version. It’s a technique Go Daddy mastered over the last six years with its GoDaddy-esque Super Bowl campaigns. The online commercials, where the broadcast storyline plays out, are edgier and intended to entertain and leverage Web traffic.

The Grand prize is $250,000, the runner-up earns $150,000, third prize is worth $75,000 and five Honorable Mention winners will be paid $25,000 each – making this the largest guaranteed payout in any commercial contest ever. All entries must be thirty-seconds in length and end with the Go Daddy logo and theme song.

Also new in Go Daddy’s Summer Edition Contest, a six-figure “Campaign Bonus.” Go Daddy CEO and Founder Bob Parsons came up with the idea as a way to generate related story-lines. A contestant who enters an outstanding set of three or more ads featuring a theme and/or recurring characters could win an additional $100,000, on top of the prize money earned for placing in the contest.

“We were impressed with the creative entries from our first commercial contest earlier this year,” Parsons smiled. “People came up with some fun ways to tell the Go Daddy story. This time around we’re asking for another element by adding the Internet-Only component. Those can be pretty tough to pull off, so we increased the prize money. Plus we’re upping the ante with the Campaign Bonus worth a hundred grand.”

As the driving force behind Go Daddy’s legendary Super Bowl advertising campaigns, Parsons plans to be the sole judge for the “Go Daddy Commercial Contest: Summer Edition,” which opened this morning. The Go Daddy CEO looks forward to seeing how customers will impress him this time around.

Just as Go Daddy makes it easy for customers to build an online presence, entering this contest is also a snap. Contestants upload their entries to www.GoDaddy.com/Contest.

Professionals and rookies alike are encouraged to enter – all that’s required is some imagination, a sense of humor and a basic video camera. Go Daddy’s original contest winner, Jessie Ottolini, had never produced a commercial. If you watch the “Go Momma” crew’s wild reaction to seeing their ad as the winner during the Indy 500 race broadcast last May, you get a sense for how surprised and excited these first-time commercial producers were about the contest.

To enter, log on to www.GoDaddy.com/Contest. All entries must be received by Sept. 30. Winners will be announced in October. The contest is open to residents of the 50 United States, 18 years and older. Check out the official contest rules and submit your commercial online now.

The company mentions that cloud servers allow customers to take control, creating new servers instantly and resizing existing capacity immediately via a user-friendly web control panel. Customers save money by buying exactly the capacity they need today, knowing that they can immediately scale up when required.

It avers that cloud servers run any server operating system, are fully configurable and designed for scalable web hosting and on-demand burst computing. The company adds that the cloud hosting package is available from its UK as well as US data centers, and is built on the high performance 10 Gbps SuperNetwork infrastructure and offers a 100% SLA with 100x credits for any downtime.

Dominic Monkhouse, UK MD of ServerBeach commented on the launch, “Self-service cloud servers are perfect for our ServerBeach customers. We work with many fast growth companies and developers whose hosting needs change on a day-to-day basis, so to support this we have built in flexible and scalable cloud servers on a pay as you go model. ServerBeach is built ‘By Geeks, For Geeks’ and we know that our customers will love this extra flexibility and control.”

Richard Davies, CEO at ElasticHosts, said, “We are delighted to offer our award-winning cloud servers to ServerBeach’s customers. We’re confident that they’ll be as excited by the scalability and flexibility as our own customers have been.”
